GMG Radio Appoints Revenue Boss To Boost Incomes

Guardian Media Group Radio has poached Jo Beedham from rival Chrysalis to lead the development of the company’s non-traditional revenue streams, marking the company’s intent to broaden its financial horizons and capitalise on new services and business opportunities.

The new position will see Beedham join GMG Radio in February from Chrysalis Radio Sales, taking responsibility for maximising interactive revenues and building revenue streams from services such as mobile phone texting, personalised ring tones and dating services. She will also work to enhance the company’s national and regional sponsorship and promotions operations.

The newly created position as head of non traditional revenues will enable Beedham to develop GMG Radio’s opportunities for commercial clients targeting listeners of its Real Radio, Smooth FM and Jazz FM brands through means other than traditional spot advertising.

Beedham will be based within Smooth FM in Manchester, reporting to Julian Carter, group director of sales. Commenting on the appointment Carter said: “Clients want to work more closely with content, and to provide proper multi-platform solutions, we need to be able to lever and integrate our station brands more effectively with advertisers”.

Last year saw media super-regulator Ofcom drop programming restrictions from GMG Radio’s Jazz FM, allowing the station to broadcast a range of music and broaden its appeal to advertisers. The format change saw the station released from its obligation to ensure that ‘50% of the output in daytime sits well with the term Jazz’, permitting it to to play a much more consistent mix of music across the day and broaden its appeal (see Jazz FM To Increase Advertiser Appeal With Mixed Playlists).
