HDTV Looks Set For Growth

Brian Sullivan, Sky customer group managing director, has said that HDTV can expect a bright future, with customers now more willing to replace their old TV sets.

Sullivan, speaking at Broadcast‘s HD Here And Now conference, said that Sky had predicted there would be 10 million HD TV sets in the UK by 2010 but now expected to hit 10 million in two and a half years time.

In addition, it was revealed at the conference that one out of every ten homes now has an HD-ready television set, with Sky transmitting 3,500 hours of HD programming every month.

This week also saw France establish a new law which outlines the future of television. One of the key aspects is the decision to introduce High Definition digital terrestrial television and a mandate to include HD tuners in HD-ready TVs.

Recent research from the Diffusion Group showed that approximately 40% of HDTVs are now residing in rooms other than the family or living room (see HDTVs Expanding Beyond Home Living Rooms).

Meanwhile, Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts that there will be 151 million HDTV homes worldwide by the end of 2011 – more than three times the number at the end of 2006 (see HDTV Could Be In 151 Million Homes Globally By 2011).
