Holmes Quits GMTV After More Than A Decade

GMTV will lose one of its best known faces in April as presenter Eamonn Holmes sits on the breakfast show’s famous red sofa for the final time, ending a career of more than 12 years with the broadcaster.

Holmes has been the face of GMTV since it began in 1993, steering it to success and into the homes of six million viewers every weekday morning. Explaining his departure, Holmes said: “What a privilege it has been to wake up the nation over the years with stories that affected all our lives. I’ve covered every type of story imaginable at GMTV and it’s the right time to move on.”

The early morning stalwart expressed regret at leaving his presenting partner, Fiona Phillips, however, stating: “I’ll particularly miss my partnership with Fiona Phillips and I wish her and all the rest of the team the very best for the future.”

Phillips added: “This is our ninth year together, in fact, I have spent more time with Eamonn than I have with my own husband! I will miss him more than words can say.”

Paul Corley, managing director of GMTV, was also sad to see Holmes announce his departure. He said: “Eamonn is now well established as one of the country’s most talented and versatile broadcasters and he has always brought great strength and personality to our schedule. We will miss him greatly and we wish him the very best for the future.”

Last year saw ITV given the go ahead to acquire the majority stake in GMTV in a deal worth £31 million, despite wide-spread concern from the advertising industry (see ITV Gets Go Ahead For £31 Million GMTV Acquisition).
