Independent To Relaunch Next Tuesday

The Independent will be unveiling a new look next Tuesday, with a substantial redesign barely 12 months after the newspaper went compact.

The new look has been masterminded over several months by Barcelona-based, Cases and Associates, resulting in one of the main changes being The Independent becoming a one-section paper from Monday to Friday.

The magazine-sized review section will now be incorporated into the main paper, which will expand to as many as 104 pages on some days.

The Indy will be “cutting edge, European, very modern, fresh , but still definitely The Independent“, according to editor, Simon Kelner, with the changes being more “evolutionary then revolutionary.”

Simplifying the navigation of the paper is one of the main reasons behind the revamp. Kelner said: “We’re putting some breaks and pauses into the section to avoid it being relentless.”

The Indy’s relaunch will be backed with a major advertising campaign across TV, outdoor, commuter and trade media.

Just yesterday, rival paper The Guardian was reported to be switching, to a smaller format as the recent decline of the newspapers circulation is thought to be worrying executives (see Guardian To Down-Size In Autumn).

According to a report in the Independent on Sunday, the new compact The Guardian will typically contain three main stories on the front page along with a picture.
