IPC Claims Victory In Festive TV Listings Battle

IPC Media has claimed victory in the TV listings magazine market over Christmas, reporting that its What’s on TV title rose above the Radio Times to claim the festive top spot for the second year in a row.
The magazine giant claims to have achieved a Christmas sale of over 2.5 million copies, overtaking the Radio Times by more than 100,000. Elsewhere, the publisher claims its TVTimes title saw sales of almost 1.1 million to outperform rival TV Quick by 600,000 copies. The company’s TV & Satellite Week also claims success, with a Christmas sale of 314,000, outselling H Bauer’s Total TV Guide by almost 100,000 copies.
Commenting on the company’s festive performance, IPC tx managing director Philippa Brown said: “It’s great news that IPC tx is the market leader – once again we’ve driven the majority of sales this Christmas, outperforming the market in all the sectors in which we operate. This success can be attributed to fantastic editorial , additional marketing investment and brilliant publishing and distribution expertise.”
The circulation increase follows increased competition in the TV listings sector, with IPC cutting the price of What’s on TV and sparking fears of a price war with rival publishers (see IPC Boosts TV Guide Value With Lower Cover Price). H Bauer followed suit last week, cutting 10p off the price of TV Choice, taking it to 30p (see Cuts Spark Fear Of TV Mag Price War).
