ITV Signs Springer To Fill Trisha’s Daytime Slot

Jerry Springer is to host a high-profile talk show on ITV1 after being approached by the broadcaster to fill the shoes of recently departed daytime stalwart, Trisha Goddard.

A spokeswoman for ITV confirmed that the controversial host would be presenting a month-long run of morning shows, starting at around 9:30 and running for an hour.

The format of Springer’s new show is believed to be similar to that of Goddard’s studio-based confessionals, which came to an end when the high-profile ‘face of daytime TV’ parted company with the channel to join Five last year (see ITV Talk-Show Stalwart Jumps Ship To Five).

The new show is being made by Granada and overseen by ITV editor of daytime, Nick Thorogood and controller of off-peak, Steven Andrew.

Trisha’s show was a consistently strong feature of ITV’s daytime schedules, regularly attracting more than a million viewers and securing a 30% share of the available audience in its 9.25 am slot. However, reports at the time of Trisha’s departure suggested that the show was about to be axed by ITV bosses after a series of rows over money and editorial control.
