June ABCs: Lack of World Cup sees newspaper circulation falls

Without the boost of FIFA World Cup to drive sales, June was a pretty tough month for the national daily newspaper market.

The Financial Times and Guardian were the only papers to see any circulation growth, with former up 3.8% period on period and the latter adding an additional 28 copies.

The overall daily market fell 0.7% period on period and down 8.5% year on year. Once again The Sun newspaper had the biggest fall in circulation, with its grip as the nation’s most popular paper under threat from Daily Mail. The red top was down 1.9% PoP, shedding 25,004 copies.

Things were slightly better in the Sunday’s market, with four titles posting improved period on period figures. The best performing title was Sunday Express, which had a 0.5% increase in circulation during June. The Sunday’s market still dipped, though only marginally, by 0.7& PoP.

The London free press – which includes the Evening Standard, City A.M. and Metro was down -3.8% overall in June in keeping with the general downward trend for print titles.
