LG launches 4K OLED TVs

LG Electronics has announced the first commercial launch of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs, coupled with 4K resolution.

The new curved screens, which come in two models, employ an advanced panel which features a proprietary four-color pixel WRGB technology. With 33 million sub-pixels, the result is perceived as richer, brighter and more natural hues on the screen.

The move is a first for the industry, however, Sony and Panasonic also showcased their own prototype 4K OLED devices at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2013, but have chosen not to put them into production. Instead, the rival companies will offer 4K sets based on synthetic LED technology instead.

“LG 4K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and a new paradigm that will change the dynamics of the next generation TV market,” said Hyun-hwoi Ha, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“As the next evolutionary step in display technology, OLED will play a major role in reshaping our industry. I feel confident when I say that 4K OLED is a bona fide game changer.”

LG will begin taking pre-orders for its 65 and 77-inch 4K OLED TVs starting in Korea this week, with availability in key markets in North America and Europe to follow next month.
