MacKenzie Gets New Role At Media Square

Kelvin MacKenzie has been appointed non-executive chairman of UK communications group, Media Square, taking up the position with immediate effect.

Media Square expanded its operations last year, buying Huntsworth PLC’s marketing services for £55 million in November.

Commenting on MacKenzie’s new position, Jeremy Middleton said: “Kelvin’s expertise in, and knowledge of, the media sector, plus his ability to successfully manage large and complex organisations, will be of great benefit to the group.”

Mackenzie recently resigned as chairman of Highbury House, saying that a “mountain of debt” had defeated him. His departure from the company followed long-running restructuring talks earlier in the year, and the sale of 38 magazine titles to rival publisher, Future, for a cash consideration of £30.5 million (see Highbury Magazine Sale Approved).

Following MacKenzie’s departure, Highbury was put up for sale at the beginning of this year, with the company claiming that it would be “highly unlikely” to deliver much return for shareholders following the sale of its magazine assets (see Highbury Up For Sale After Defeat By Debt).

Highbury’s last remaining magazines were sold off earlier this week, with Bournemouth-based Imagine Publishing snapping up 24 of the failed company’s computer and gaming titles.

The magazines, including PC Home, Play and iCreate, were secured following a 2.7 million investment by Imagine’s venture capital backer Kleinwort Capital (see Highbury House Sell Off Continues).
