Maxim Appoints New Editor

Maxim Michael Donlevy has been appointed as the new editor of Dennis Publishing’s Maxim magazine.

Donlevy joins Maxim from his current role at Dennis Publishing as deputy editor of Men’s Fitness and will take over as Maxim‘s editor in early October.

His appointment follows the departure of Derek Harbinson from the position last week. Harbinson left after just over a year in the job (see Maxim Editor Steps Down).

Donlevy joined Dennis in 1995 as part of the Microscope team before moving on to become chief sub editor of Maxim until 2001. After a period freelancing he returned to Dennis Publishing in 2004.

Reporting into Bruce Sandell, MD of the consumer division at Dennis, Donlevy will be focusing on evaluating the current direction of Maxim and developing a more service led magazine.

In addition to Donlevy’s appointment, Dennis has also announced that Pete Muir, currently editor of Men’s Fitness, has been promoted to editorial director across both Maxim and Men’s Fitness, and has accepted a place on the Dennis lifestyle board.

Donlevy said: “The mass market men’s market has changed enormously in the past few years, and men have access to the internet and mobile content that didn’t exist in 1997.

Maxim offers its readers fantastic digital content and I want Maxim magazine to offer more than you can find in any other mass market men’s monthly or weekly magazine. The best, quirkiest news, investigative features, in-depth reviews, oh, and women that make you actually want to know them.”

Bruce Sandell, MD of consumer division at Dennis Publishing, said: “I am delighted to announce Michael’s appointment – working with Pete Muir he has had fantastic success on Men’s Fitness. Michael comes to the magazine armed with loads of great ideas to take Maxim into its next phase.”

The latest ABC figures, for January to June 2007, show that Maxim has a circulation of almost 107,700, after a year on year decline of more than 38,500 copies (see ABC Results Jan-Jun 2007:Big Declines In Men’s Sector).
