Mooney Answers The Call At NTL

Cable operator NTL has announced that James Mooney is to become non-executive chairman. The appointment ends a long search to fill the position which became available last autumn when George Blumenthal, was forced out by bondholders.

Mooney was most recently chief operating officer at US mobile operator, Nextel Communications. He will work alongside NTL chief executive Barclay Knapp and direct strategy following the company’s emergence from bankruptcy protection (see NTL Emerges From Bankruptcy).

According to the Financial Times, efforts to lure Lord Hollick, chief executive of United Business Media, were unsuccessful but Mooney’s appointment is likely to go down well with US investors.

NTL’s acting chairman William Huff said: “His operational expertise, financial acumen and keen understanding of return on invested capital will lend itself perfectly to the unique hands-on requirement of the NTL chairman position.”
