More Sports For Sky Sports HD

HDTV Sky Sports has announced that it will broadcast more live sport in high definition this year including the US Open and USPGA Championship.

The US Open from Oakmont (14-17 June) and USPGA Championship from Southern Hills (9-12 August) will be the second and third golf events to be broadcast live in HD on Sky Sports, following live coverage of the 2006 Ryder Cup from the K Club (see Ryder Cup To Be Shown Across Multiple Sky Platforms).

Live coverage of the Royal International Horse Show from Hickstead (25-29 July) and Poker Million VI (11 Sept-21 Dec) will also be shown in HD – it will be the first time an Equestrian event and Poker tournament will have been broadcast in HD in the UK.

Sky Sports has broadcast live sport in HD since 22 May 2006 when coverage of England’s 2nd Test against Sri Lanka became the first ever HD broadcast on Sky Sports. Since then Sky Sports has staged more than 100 HD outside broadcasts in six different sports.

Darren Long, head of operations at Sky Sports, said: “HD helps bring the electric atmosphere of live sport right into peoples’ homes. Detail picked up by HD including the emotions on players’ and fans’ faces, and critical decisions can all be seen in greater clarity in HD.”

Viewers who want to watch Sky Sports HD will need an HD Ready TV and Sky HD box and subscription. The Sky HD box costs £299 with a £10 per month subscription charge for viewing the Sky HD channels. This £10 charge is in addition to the customer’s regular Sky digital subscription.

Sky recently decided to get rid of its monthly Sky+ subscription charge in an attempt to increase take-up and loyalty amongst its digital customers (see Sky+ Subscription Charge To End).
