Multi-Channel Television Statistics Q1 2004
Multi-channel TV now reaches 56.7% of UK homes, says the latest Digital Television Uptake report from industry watchdog, Ofcom.
Free-to-view households grew by 18% to 3.6 million households, while total UK digital households grew to just slightly over 13 million, up by 5.7%. The only digital platform to suffer a set back over the past quarter was ADSL, which fell by 2.6%.

The market share of total multichannel homes by platforms is as shown.
Sky increased its subscriber base by 66,000 during the quarter, reaching 6,956,000 however, this was a decrease when compared to Q4 2003 when 175,000 new subscribers joined the pay-TV service.

DTT showed another strong quarter of growth, says Ofcom, adding over 500,00 households, an increase of 18.6% on the previous quarter. A reason for the continued growth could be that set-top boxes have recently reduced in price to around £50 – about half the launch price.

UK cable households grew to over 3.3 million by the end of March 2004. Of these slightly over 2 million subscribed to NTL, 1.2 million to Telewest and the remainder to Omne Communications and Wightcable.
