Newland Steps Down As Daily Telegraph Editor

Telegraph Cover Martin Newland has resigned as editor of the Daily Telegraph, being replaced immediately by John Bryant as acting editor.

Newland is due to leave the newspaper at the end of the month, with industry speculation claiming that Newland did not want to work under a editor-in-chief after Bryant’s recent appointment.

Earlier this year, Newland signed Neil Darbyshire and William Lewis as joint deputy editors in part of a editorial reshuffle a head of the publications revamp which is thought to include higher pagination and more daily sections (see Telegraph Reshuffles Editorial Ahead Of Revamp).

The appointments offer “the qualities most suited to driving forward change and development at the title,” according to Newland, who also stated that any change would maintain the paper’s “reputation for quality, integrity and comprehensive coverage.

During October, the Daily Telegraph suffered a slight decline in its circulation, with the latest ABC figures showing a 0.3% year on year drop, taking the total figure down to 901,887.
