News Corp And Vivendi May Merge Italian Pay-TV Businesses, Says FT
According to a report in the Financial Times News Corporation and Vivendi Universal are in talks about merging their Italian pay-TV businesses, Stream and Telepiu. Talks are said to be at an early stage and similar discussions are understood to have fallen through in the past.
The main obstacles to such a merger, says ABN Amro, are firstly control – neither group would be likely to want to hand control of the merged business to the other – and secondly intervention by the Italian and European competition regulators.
However, a merger of the operations could help to cut back the substantial losses that both digital operators are currently experiencing, says the broker.
