Daily Market
If no news is good news, then April was a good month for national newspapers – with no significant changes to report.
The quality market continues to perform well, with the Financial Times up 3.7% compared with the previous month – an extra 7,000 sales.
The Daily Telegraph (1.5%), The Times (1.1%) and the Guardian (0.4%) were also up period-on-period – with just the i recording a decline in circulation (-0.5%).
Elsewhere, the Daily Record’s circulation dropped by -1.7%, while the Daily Mirror was down -0.8%.
The Sun managed a 1% increase, adding an extra 14,800 copies.
Overall the market was up by 0.5% PoP and down -4.3% year-on-year.
Sunday Market
There was slightly more activity in the Sunday market – largely because of a number of declines, although minor, across the board.
The Sunday Mirror was down -3.1% PoP, followed by the Sunday Post (-2.3%) and Sunday People (-1.9%).
Three titles managed to buck the trend, however – with the Daily Star Sunday up 1.4% PoP, the Observer up 1.3% and the Sunday Express up 0.4%.
Overall the market was down -0.8% PoP and -8.9% over the year.
London Free Press
The London Evening Standard took the biggest hit in the free market, although small, with circulation down -2.6% on the previous month.
City A.M. recorded an almost insignificant -0.6% PoP decline, while Metro (London) was up by 0.1% (an extra 466 copies).
While the overall market was down -0.3% PoP, Metro’s strong performance over the year (+17.6%) means it was up 6.1% YoY.
