NTL Trials Digital TV On The Move

NTL has taken the first step towards the provision of a digital TV signal that can be received by moving vehicles, with the completion of a successful trial of the technology, which utilises the existing frequency spectrum.

NTL’s trials of a rugged form of the established DVB-T transmission took place in the Oxford area. A multi-channel service was broadcast over a single-frequency network and was received in a vehicle with seat-back TV screens, demonstrating, claims NTL “excellent picture quality and signal robustness.” Of the three digital TV platforms only terrestrial can offer mobile reception.

Steve Holebrook, business director for media solutions at NTL Broadcast, said: “It’s important that we explore this developing technology to show that what can be achieved in mobile TV with relatively little frequency spectrum. The mobile audience is an untapped market for TV delivery and one which only digital terrestrial broadcasts can readily fill.”

Last year NTL built the world’s first commercial mobile digital TV network in Singapore, providing a service to video screens installed on public transport.
