Ofcom Awards Kidderminster FM Licence To ACE FM

Government watchdog, Ofcom has awarded the latest licence in its programme of development for the nation’s radio spectrum to ACE FM, part of Midlands News Association regional press group

ACE FM’s new FM local commercial radio licence will provide Kidderminster and local surrounding area with a locally focussed music, news and information schedule for 25-54 year olds within the vicinity. However, the exact area of cover will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics.

Ofcom expects ACE FM to begin broadcasting at the earliest opportunity, citing a start time not later than two years after its award date.

The acquisition of the 12-year licence was hotly contested, with Ofcom receiving three applications for the much sought after Midlands’s station by the 18 November. The media watchdog will shortly publish a statement outlining the determining factors for the award of this licence shortly.

Recently Ofcom awarded the FM local commercial radio licence for Ashford in Kent to Local Ashford Radio Kent (Lark) partially owned by Kent Messenger, which will broadcast in the area as KM-FM Ashford.

The beginning of February saw Ofcom advertise the availability of a FM licence covering the Solent area of Britain. The licence will serve a population of around 1.25 million adults and is the largest and most lucrative yet to be advertised by Ofcom.
