Online Adspend Almost $4 Billion In Q1

Internet advertising revenues reached a record $3.9 billion in the first quarter of 2006, reveals a new report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

This represents a 38% increase over Q1 2005 at $2.8 billion and a 6% increase over Q4 2005 at $3.6 billion, and follows on from the record $12.5 billion reported for the whole of 2005 (see Online Aspend Hits $12.5 Billion In 2005).

Greg Stuart, chief executive officer of the IAB, said: “The steady growth of online advertising is a clear indication that marketers continue to believe in the opportunities and effectiveness that this medium delivers in reaching and engaging their consumers.

“The interactive advertising industry remains committed to the creation of a world class medium with best of breed standards, measurement guidelines, research and ad products for marketers and agencies.”

Peter Petrusky, director of advisory at PwC, added: “The internet continues to shape the media landscape as more advertising dollars are going online. It is abundantly clear that marketers are seeing a compelling opportunity to leverage the internet as a powerful medium that drives both branding and sales results.”

Online adspend is predicted to continue its impressive performance this year, with research by Initiative forecasting a 27% global increase and a 26% increase in the UK (see Internet Adspend Likely To Grow For 2006).

Adspend across all other media combined fell by almost £200 million year on year in 2005.
