Price War Brews Over Free Broadband

Broadband Cable A price war looks set to erupt amongst Britain’s broadband providers this week, as mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse prepares to launch a free service for landline customers.

Falling under its Talk Talk brand, it is not known what speed the service will offer consumers, or whether stringent usage caps will be imposed. Despite much speculation over the weekend, the phone firm has yet to comment on its intentions for the sector.

The move would put pressure on rivals in the fast growing broadband sector, forcing a pricing re-think for many competing providers.

Recent weeks have seen an increasing number of companies announce plans for broadband services. BT recently unveiled details of its on-demand TV service, BT Vision (see BT Unveils Next Generation TV Service), while BSkyB has revealed its plans for IPTV and on-demand content to analysts (see Sky To Launch IPTV Service In 2007).

Sky is also expected to begin offering customers low-cost broadband connections, following its acquisition of internet service provider, EasyNet, last year (see Sky Nets ISP For Triple Play Services).
