Record Number Of Texts Sent In May

A record number of text messages were sent during May, with a massive 2.63 billion texts transmitted, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA), representing an increase of 20% year on year.

May also saw the highest average daily figure recorded to date, with 85 million messages being sent per day.

Earlier this month saw the MDA unveil WAP usage figures for April, with the medium continuing to grow in popularity. A total of 1.76 billion page impressions were viewed in the UK during April, representing an increase of 24% compared with the same period in 2004, and an average daily total of 58.9 million.

March also saw a strong surge in test messages, with an impressive 2.57 billion sent, a 21% increase on the number sent in March 2004 and a massive 93% rise on 2002’s figure (see March Text Messages Continues To Break Records).

February 2005 saw 2.19 billion text messages sent, with person to person texts across the UK GSM network operators showing an increase of 7.2% on the total sent during the same period in 2004 (see February Text Messages Reach 2.19 Billion).

January also broke records, with an average daily total of 82 million messages sent, an increase of 15.7% on the same period in 2004 (see January 2005 Breaks Text Message Record).
