Strong Kids’ Films Top December Box Office

Kids’ films topped December’s box office chart, with animated super hero adventure, The Incredibles, raking in takings of over £16.3 million, securing the top spot despite being released in mid-November.

Elsewhere Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events also proved popular, with box office takings surpassing the £8 million mark to grab second place in the charts. Another childrens’ title, The Polar Express secured third place, taking £7.8 million in December.

The impressive performance underlines the success of kids’ films throughout 2004, with titles such as Shrek 2, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Shark Tale collectively bringing in £143.9 million over the year (see Kids Films Dominate Box Office In 2004).

Shrek 2 in particular proved that the market for childrens’ films is a lucrative one, clocking up box office takings of £48.1 million during 2004.

Elsewhere Bridget Jones: Edge Of Reason managed to stay in the top five films, despite being released almost two months earlier, drawing almost £7 million in box office takings throughout December to beat new releases Phantom Of The Opera and Blade: Trinity , earning £6 million and £5.9 million respectively over the month.

Londoners were the most prolific cinema-goers during December, with 3.6 million visits constituting 25.2% of the nation’s total cinema audience. Those in the Midlands were also keen on seeing the latest releases, with 2 million visits constituting 14.2% of the nation’s total. Those in the Border region made up the smallest percentage of movie fans, at 0.9% during December.
