talkSPORT Wins Rights To Liverpool Matches

Talk Sport Commercial speech radio, talkSport, has won the commentary rights for Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool Champions League matches, marking the first time the radio station has struck a deal with Liverpool.

The deal will see talkSPORT cover UEFA Champions League fixtures for all three clubs on a national basis as well as Premiership home games by Chelsea and Arsenal for London only transmission.

Commenting on the coverage, Scott Taunton, chief executive of The Wireless Group, said: “This is a great day for talkSPORT and reinforces our commitment to live sport and football in particular. There is no doubt that talkSPORT listeners love our distinctive style of commentary — which is passionate, lively and perfectly in tune with the terraces.”

He continued: “Of course we will continue to broadcast our incredibly popular Football First programme from noon to five on Saturday afternoons, which provides the ultimate in matchday coverage with reports from around the grounds across the country.”

According to the latest RAJAR figures, talkSPORT increased its weekly reach by 2.6% year on year, nwo reaching an audience of 2,211 million.

Ulster TV bought TWG earlier this summer in a deal worth around £98 million (see UTV Shareholders Approve TWG Acquisition).

UTV’s acquisition follows a failed shareholder buy-out earlier this year, led by chairman and chief executive, Kelvin MacKenzie (see Wireless Group Halts Takeover Talks With MacKenzie).
