Times Archive Goes Online

Times Online has unveiled a digital newspaper archive going back more than 200 years.

The archive contains more than 20 million articles from every edition of the Times, leaving out just a small number of damaged issues, from 1785 to 1985.

The archive is currently free, with editor-in-chief of Times Online Anne Spackman saying that no decision will be made whether it will remain free or use a subscription model until it has generated a solid base of users.

A full-time archive editor is working alongside the news team to tie suitable stories into the day’s news.

Work is set to begin soon on digitising the rest of the Times editions, as well as an archive of the Sunday Times from 1822 to 2000.
