Last night’s thrilling football match between Arsenal and Barcelona proved to be a ratings winner for ITV1, with a peak of 7.8 million viewers tuning in to the action.

An average of 6.3 million viewers watched the entire Live UEFA Champions League coverage, on from 7.30pm to 10pm, a 26.3% share of viewing.

It was a great match, with Arsenal showing some true grit in coming back from two goals down to level the match at 2-2.

Non-football fans were treated to a classic of another type on BBC One, with the MasterChef juggernaut rolling on at 8pm.

The hour long show had a peak audience of almost 4.9 million viewers (a 19.5% share), while an average of 4.5 million (an 18.4% share) stayed with it for its duration.

It was squeaky bum time in last night’s show, as the remaining six contestants cooked for the Women’s Institute and were tested on chicken by John and Gregg.
