Two Digital Radio Stations To Close

Radio Two national digital radio stations, Oneword and Core, are shutting down this weekend.

Core will cease broadcasting today, while speech station Oneword, whose future has been in doubt for some time, will close on Saturday.

Both stations were broadcast via digital audio broadcasting (DAB) on Digital One, the national digital radio multiplex majority-owned by GCap.

In a scaling back of its digital offerings, GCap has also earmarked digital music station Life for closure, while it has also removed the chillout station Chill from the Sky digital platform.

Oneword was launched by UBC in 2000 and was part-owned with Channel 4 until the broadcaster sold its 51% stake back to UBC.

A statement on the Oneword website said: “Unfortunately Oneword will no longer be broadcasting from Saturday 12th January.

“We are genuinely grateful to all our listeners for their loyal and continued support over the last eight years. We wish you a very happy 2008.”
