U>Direct Parent Goes Into Liquidation

Digital Broadcasting Company (DBC), parent group of the u>direct pay-TV service, has gone into liquidation, according to reports. It is thought that financial backers, which include Pearson and News Corp, were unwilling to put any more cash into the business.

U>Direct, which launched in June 1999, broadcast a range of sport and movie pay-per-view services via the Sky Digital platform. It is understood that the service was attracting fewer than 35,000 customers per month.

The group’s biggest programming coup was in securing the rights to the England v Finland World Cup qualifying game in October last year. The broadcast of the match was subsequently beset by a number of serious technical problems which left many viewers unable to watch the game.
