UK Outdoor Revenue Grows 5.1% In Q3

Outdoor advertising revenue increased by 5.1% year on year during the third quarter of 2002, according to the latest figures from the Outdoor Advertising Association (OAA).

The OAA’s chief executive Alan James describes the figures as ‘steady, rather than rocketing’ and does not anticipate a stronger upswing for at least another twelve months.

Growth was fuelled by consumer sectors such as drink (+64%), entertainment (+53%), travel (+49%) and cosmetics (+47%). The positive figures will come as a relief for the outdoor industry which suffered a 10.9% drop in revenues during in Q1 2002 and a 1.9% decline during Q2.

“Outdoor’s recovery is slow because of the slow lead-in times; for example, now we are asking people to commit funds to ads for next February and March. We are the last into a recession, but also the last out – investors are nervous and unwilling to commit so far in advance,” added James.

Related forecasts Recent figures from media agency OMD UK, predict that outdoor will show a 1.5% growth for the full year 2002, rising to 4.4% next year (see UK Cinema, Outdoor & Online Forecasts From OMD UK). This compares to a total ad market which is predicted by the Advertising Association to be up around 1.4% in 2002 and by 6.8% in 2003. These figures are drawn from averages of the AA’s high and low option long term forecasts, as shown.
