There were 50.2 million US homes and businesses connecting to the internet via broadband by the end of last year, marking a 33% increase from 2004, according to a recently released report by the Federal Communications Commission.
The report also showed that 99% of the U.S. population lives in 99% of the ZIP codes that have one high-speed access provider.
Recent research from Leichtman Research Group (LRG) forecast that by 2011 there will be over 105 million residential online subscribers in the US, with over 80% subscribing to broadband (see Over 105 Million US Residential Online Subscribers By 2010).
Closer to home, Strategy Analytics released figures showing that during 2006 another 16 million European homes will be added to the 18 million which adopted the service in 2005 (see 16 Million European Homes To Adopt Broadband In 2006).
