Leading US cable and DSL providers accounted for over 19 million high-speed internet users by the end of the first quarter of this year, according to the latest figures from Leichtman Research Group (LRG).

The figures show record growth for the quarter, with the major providers adding almost 1.9 million new subscribers. This represents 65% of the net broadband additions for the period, with cable operators taking 1.2 million subs and DSL picking up 650,000.

The top cable operators now account for 12.3 million broadband internet subscribers, maintaining a 65% share of the market versus DSL, according to Leichtman. This customer base comes from a potential reach by the top ten US cable groups of 87 million subscribers.
