US Broadband Record

US Broadband Record

The 20 largest cable and DSL providers in the US acquired a record 3.1 million subscribers during the first quarter of 2006, according to the Leichtman Research Group.

The top broadband providers have almost 46 million high speed internet subscribers, with cable having nearly 25.8 million broadband subscribers (see Broadband Accounts For Over 42 Million US Internet Connections).

When compared to cable, DSL gained 54% of net broadband additions in Q1 and top providers added a record 1.7 million subscribers during that period (see Broadband Bonanza For US Providers).

Top cable providers also had a record quarter, with the study by the Leichtman Research Group showing more than 1.4 million subscriber additions.

In each of the last six quarters DSL services have added more broadband subscribers than cable providers have managed in the same period, acquiring over 1.1 million more customers than large scale cable providers.

However, the top cable broadband providers have a 5.6 million subscriber advantage over DSL and a 56% share of the US residential broadband market.
