US Cable Modem Customers Reach 10 Million Mark

The total number of cable subscribers to high speed internet services in the US is approximately 10 million, according to a new survey by the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA).

The organisation asserts that since 1996, operators have spent more than $65 billion upgrading cable systems to enable consumers to access digital broadband services. This is evidently bearing fruit as subscriptions increased twofold to 7.2 million in 2001 and it is reckoned that almost 3 million new customers have signed up in the first nine months of this year.

“Surpassing 10 million high speed internet customers is a significant milestone for the cable industry and reflects continued steady growth in consumer demand for cable broadband services,” said Robert Sachs, President and CEO of the NCTA.

The NCTA claims that cable modem service via upgraded broadband systems is now available to more than 75 million US households. Of these homes, it is estimated that 50 million own personal computers so there remains plenty of scope for expansion.
