US Internet Users Prefer Free Video

Over 70% of US internet users who watch video online prefer to watch and download videos for free, sponsored by pre-roll advertising, according to the newly released results of a survey from AP and AOL.

Only 23% of respondents said that they would prefer to pay for ad-free content, with users also preferring shorter videos.

Of those surveyed, 20% had downloaded or watched a full length movie or TV show, with the poll also reporting that 54% of US internet users consume video online.

32% of respondents said that they watch more video online than they did a year ago, whilst 80% said that their TV viewing habits remained unchanged.

The poll found that the top categories of video were news (72%) and TV or movie clips (59%).

A recent report from In-Stat said that the worldwide market for online content services is expected to expand by a factor of 10, growing from about 13 million households during 2005 to more than 131 million households by 2010 (see Online Video Market To Grow Tenfold By 2010).
