Virgin To Launch Third Digital Station Next Month

Virgin Xtreme Logo Virgin Radio is to extend its digital portfolio next month with the launch of a new station, aimed at a youth audience and playing only the newest guitar-based music.

Virgin Radio Xtreme aims to bring the “best bands and newest releases” to the nation through Sky, DAB digital radio and online at www.virginradioxtreme.co.uk.

Explaining the launch, Paul Jackson, acting chief executive at Virgin Radio, said: “Virgin Radio Xtreme will be as passionate, demanding and on the edge of the best new music, as it’s listeners. We are the most credible rock station in the country and we are now reaching out to new younger listeners who have always been poorly served by the pop led stations across the country. They are about to discover how good a station designed just for them can sound.”

Amongst those due for inclusion in the new station’s playlist are bands of the moment, Razorlight, The Killers, and Kaiser Chiefs. Virgin Xtreme will also play new songs from bigger artists, such as Green Day, Foo Fighters and Blur, as well as the cream of today’s cutting edge music scene: Bloc Party, Hard-Fi and The Subways.

The new station will launch on 5 September, complementing Virgin’s existing digital offerings, Virgin Radio Groove and Virgin Radio Classic Rock.

The broadcaster recently moved to widen the output of Classic Rock, launching live programming including speech output from rock legend Alice Cooper in June (see Rock Legend Cooper To Hit Virgin Radio Tonight).
