VoIP Market Up 6% In Q2 2006

Revenue generated by next generation voice and intelligent IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) equipment is expected to rise from around $2.5 billion last year to $5.8 billion in the US in 2009, according to a new report from Infonetics research.

Infonetics said that the VoIP market is up about 6% in the second quarter of 2006, recovering from a similar decline in the first quarter of 2005.

The report showed that shipments of IP telephones are also on the rise in the US, growing by about 17% in Q2 2006, or around 2.1 million shipments.

In addition, Infonetics expects the number of residential and small office/home office (SOHO) VoIP subscribers worldwide to almost double by the end of the year to more than 47 million subscribers.

An earlier report from Infonetics said that VoIP services will have $120 billion spent on them in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific between 2005 and 2009 (see European VoIP Service Revenue To Reach $12.7 Billion In 2009), whilst the number of worldwide VoIP subscribers is expected to almost double 2005 to 2006, when it will top 47 million.

A recent report from Point Topic revealed that subscriber numbers to retail VoIP services rose by 83% during 2005, from 10.3 million at the beginning of the year to over 18.7 million subscribers by the end (see VoIP Subscriber Numbers Rose By 83% In 2005).
