VoIP To Increase Penetration In Two Years

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is poised for significant growth, with a report from analysts eMarketer predicting the next two years to mark the turning point for the technology.

The new VoIP: Spending and Trends report focuses on the many factors driving VoIP adoption. Steve Butler, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the report said: “Despite the long road ahead consumer and business migration to VoIP is on the verge of moving out of the early adoption phase and into the mainstream, and the next two years will mark the turning point when widespread VoIP use finally begins to take off.”

Telecom consultancy, ATLANTIC-ACM predicts that US retail VoIP service revenues will increase by a compound annual growth rate of 64% between 2003 and 2009, reaching $20.4 billion in five years time.

Migration to VoIP is predicted to reach its peak between 2010-2012, with penetration starting to grow over the next four years according to high-tech market research firm, In-Stat (see VoIP Predicted To Peak Between 2010-2012).

A recent study by International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that VoIP is beginning to attract more consumers, predicting 27 million users to have subscribed by 2009, an increase of 24 million from the 3 million who currently use the technology (see VoIP Gaining In Popularity).

A number of recent studies confirm forecasts for strong VoIP growth, predicting penetration to reach nearly 20 million households worldwide by 2010. Although currently the uptake is slow, over the next five years VoIP is estimated to reach about 25% of the high-speed internet access market, generating nearly $1 billion (see VoIP To Reach 20 Million Households By 2010).
