The European Advertising and Media Forecast, published on behalf of the UK Advertising Association, records that adspend in the EU grew by 2.5% in real terms in 1996. Forecasts for 1997 and 1998 are 3% and 2.6% respectively. (Source: European Advertising and Media Forecast, September 1997).
The Belgian Flemish Socialist Party has called for the banning of all tobacco advertising in Belgium and the establishment of a ‘tobacco prevention fund’ to be financed through higher tobacco excise duties.
The German Health Ministry has repeated its opposition to an outright ban on all tobacco advertising in the EU. The minister, Mr Seehofer, has said in an interview that the experiences of other countries shows that tobacco advertising bans do not influence the overall consumption of tobacco.
The European Parliament has adopted a compromise agreement on the Council Comparative Advertising Directive. Ria Oomen-Ruijten MEP (NL, EPP), rapporteur for the Parliament’s position, emphasised the need for harmonisation to protect consumers.
