Arts controller at LWT, Melvyn Bragg, has proposed that a percentage of the BBC licence fee should be used to produce public service programmes for ITV, Channel 4 and satellite stations. Faced with a ratings battle, ITV will find it increasingly difficult to fulfil public service duties, he stresses.

Chief executive of HTV Group, Charles Romaine, has resigned from the television company, after only two years in the position. He will be replaced by Chris Rowlands, formerly finance director with HTV. The recently accelerated risk of takeover by a larger ITV company is said to have influenced Romaine’s decision.
