Local newspaper publisher Newsquest today announced pre-tax profits of £17.3 million for the three months to April 5, up from £9m the previous year. Turnover rose from £71m to £79.5m.Classified ad revenue rose from £40.5m to £45.8m while display ad revenue went up from £18.8m to £19m. Media group Pearson has bought the US publishing group Simon & Schuster from Viacom for $4.6 billion (£2.8 billion).Pearson will then sell the reference and business part of the publisher to Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Inc., a US investment group, for $1 billion.
