The Independent has today unveiled a new design which has been created with the intention of “reviving the spirit of its founders”.
The new-look Independent has stripped back the colour and instead replaced it with a black masthead and new fonts – hoping to differentiate the paper from sister paper ‘i’.
The redesign plans to feature a variety of long and short-form content that complements the online platform. Editorials will be published on page two, followed by Dave Brown on page three and new full-page columns on pages 11 and 19.
A new arts coverage section will be added, though obituaries, business and sports pages will remain in their current positions while incorporating the new design and style.
The Independent on Saturday will also get a redesign featuring the new masthead, imagery and black and white print alongside its weekly counterpart.
“I am extremely proud to unveil the redesigned Independent,” said Amol Rajan, editor of the Independent.
“We wanted to go back to the future and embrace the maxim of our first editor Andreas Whittam Smith to develop a design that is ‘classic with a twist’.
“The new-look paper highlights our best elements; it is true to our heritage, but also radical and innovative – as the Independent has always been – and also incorporates a strong dose of mischief.”
The latest ABC results for national newspapers show that while the Independent was down -15.2% year on year to a circulation of 69,400, ‘i’ was up 5.4% to just under 300,000 copies.
