Howells Questions Digital Switch Date

Kim Howells, the new minister for broadcasting, film and tourism (see New Minister For Tourism, Film And Broadcasting Appointed) has questioned how achievable the original time scale for the analogue switch-off is (see ONdigital Chief Calls For Joint Effort In Digital TV Promotion), saying that there were too many people dependent on television for their entertainment to rush the decision.

Howells presented his views in an interview with the Financial Times today. At the same time he admitted the tendency within governments to delay difficult decisions, but suggested Christmas as a date for publication of the draft Communications Bill. On the question of ONdigital’s present difficulties, he seemed a little unsympathetic, saying Sky has achieved what it has by taking risks, and that ONdigital would have to market its way out of the situation.
