New Chris Moyles Show Pulls In The Punters For Five

Chris Moyles’ new early-evening entertainment show, Live With Chris Moyles, has added 100,000 viewers since its debut yesterday, according to unofficial overnight figures from BARB.
Last night the show, which is set in a bar in Islington’s Caledonian road, was watched by around 500,000 viewers, a 25% increase on the 400,000 who tuned in for the show’s debut on Monday.
The new show, which is produced by Chris Evans and sponsored by Carling (see Channel Five Secures Sponsor For New Moyles Show), is seen as a key part of Channel Five’s strategy to attract a bigger audience share. It is an important time for the channel, which will be looking to demonstrate its strength to advertisers after the high profile departure of chief executive, Dawn Airey, to BSkyB (see Airey To Leave Channel Five Sooner Than Expected).
Commenting on the new show, Chris Evans said: “At the moment there’s nothing available for people who don’t want game shows, soaps or news. We want to provide something different and bring new viewers to the table. The show aims to attract the same demographic as Chris’ Radio 1 show and gives them something which isn’t available elsewhere on television.”
The tabloid-style of the programme has been championed by Evans, who has made it clear he is looking to attract 16-34 year old men to Channel Five.
The 7pm slot was previously filled with an array of repeated history documentaries and entertainment programmes, which according to Channel Five, usually attract around 300,000 viewers. However, the show does not draw the audiences of Channel Five’s late night-adult movies. Last Friday Mirror Images was watched by almost 1 million viewers. While California Escorts drew 600,000 viewers on Thursday. Although Channel Five is eager to distance itself from its down-market image, this seems to be its most successful strategy for drawing in male viewers.
