Off-line goals and pitch disputes can now be examined in depth by avid football fans without even having to go to a match, thanks to a new inter- active television cable service launched yesterday, by Videotron in conjunction with LWT and Carlton TV.
The service comprises four cable channels, each with an individual function. Channel 1 will show the match as it appears in its ITV broadcast, Channel 2 views the match from a different angle, giving the audience a chance to see the match as if they are actually on the terraces. Channel 3 gives statistics on the match, goal results are updated immediately, information on the players is displayed and general commentary on the match so far, is available.
The most exciting aspect of the venture is the fourth channel, which offers the viewer an opportunity to run his own action-replays, rather than wait for the match presenter to choose the highlights. The system has an 8-second delay, and after this period of time a replay of any sequence is available.
Videotron distributes cable to 50,000 subscribers in the London area with this service being available to 80% of viewers.
