Disney+’s exponential growth has taken viewing time and share from Netflix according to IPA TouchPoints data for 2021.
Post-lockdown IPA TouchPoints 2021 data revealed changing every day habits of the British population including their streaming and social media usage.
Netflix still has the highest share of reach at 44%, then Amazon Prime at 23%, Disney+ at 15%, Now TV at 3%, YouTube Premium and Apple TV+ at 2% each and BritBox at 0.8%.
However, Netflix declined in percentage of total time viewers spent on the platform from 74% in 2018 and 2019, 65% in lockdown 2021 to 59% in post-lockdown this year.
Disney+ seems to have taken most of this viewing time and share from Netflix, growing from 7% in lockdown 2021 to 13% share of streaming video time.
The dataset found the weekly reach of subscription video on demand (SVOD) services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Now TV, Apple TV+, YouTube Premium, BritBox and Disney+, has grown by 51% as now sitting at 56%, whereas in 2018 it was at 37%.
The British public is also watching fourteen more minutes on average per day of streaming services, up from 1 hour 6 minutes in 2018, to 1 hour 20 minutes in 2021.
This SVOD growth is being driven by younger generations as it reaches 78% of 15- 24 year olds, 65% of 35-54 year olds and 31% of 55+ year olds in post-lockdown 2021.
Facebook reach increased over lockdown periods to 66%, then YouTube is at 43%, Instagram at 36%, Twitter at 23%, Snapchat at 14% and TikTok is at 13%.
However, Facebook’s share of total social time has gone down from 51% in 2018 to 41% in 2021 while TikTok is now at 6% share of social media time.
Online shopping is up to 54% in 2021 from 31% in 2018, but the high street is seeing more consumers returning as 81% of people shop in-store every week compared to 61% in the first lockdown in 2020.
