Newspaper Society Restructures Marketing Operations

The Newspaper Society has restructured its marketing department with greater emphasis on generating new business for its members.
The move comes less than a month after Russell Collier took over as marketing manager following the departure of David Hoath, who left to become group advertising sales director at regional newspaper publisher Newsquest (see Newspaper Society Appoints New Marketing Director).
The restructure will see advertising affairs executive, Michael Brannan, take on the newly created role of advertising and marketing manager, with responsibility for the collective marketing activity of the regional newspaper industry.
Brennan will lead a team to develop relationships with advertising agencies and their clients. He will also work with national sales houses to increase the sector’s share of national advertising revenue and will provide best practice advice for the local advertising departments of publishing centres.
Research and commercial manager, Alison White, also takes on a more senior role, overseeing a team responsible for all commercial activities including the industry’s conferences and awards and the society’s Feature Link service, which generates over £1m in starter ad revenue for the industry each year.
She will also manage the industry’s research projects, two of which are due to be published later in the year: Business Choice II and Back in Place, a follow-up to the Renaissance of Regional Nations report.
Commenting on the restructure, Collier said: “Over the last few years, the industry has invested an enormous amount of time and resource into reassessing the way it does business with advertisers and made major improvements in all areas, from administration and artwork delivery to customer service and the provision of advertising effectiveness research.”
He added: “Now we have the most compelling evidence of all in the Conversion Study and the time is right to get out there to meet with advertisers face to face and discuss what role we can play in their marketing activity. The promotions of Michael and Alison and the resulting new departmental structure reflect our new external focus.”
Last month the Newspaper Society released a study showing that regional newspapers are becoming increasingly popular and are now read by almost 85% of the UK’s population (see Study Shows Increasing Popularity Of Regional Newspapers).
