Good News For Glamour As Ad Revenue Doubles

ABC results for the six months to December 2002 brought more good news to Condé Nast’s Glamour magazine, which recorded a 23.1% rise in circulation to 537,474 (see ABC Jul-Dec 2002: Glamour Storms Ahead Of Competition). The magazine’s success shows no signs of slowing and figures from Nielsen Media Research reveal that the market leading title saw ad display revenue increase by an impressive 104.6% year on year during the same period.

Meanwhile, things were less positive for arch rival Cosmopolitan, which saw circulation remain virtually static at 463,058 during the six months to December. Natmags flagship women’s monthly also saw ad revenue decrease by 13.5% year on year to £19.4 million, a decline in real terms of over £3 million.

There was comfort elsewhere for Natmags, with traditional high-end title, Harpers & Queen, recording a 11.8% year on year increase in ad revenues, which rose to over £7 million. ABC results for the six months to December 2002 also brought good news to the title, which recorded a 2.3% year on year increase in circulation to 88,049, up from 86,039 in the same period in 2001.

Meanwhile, Condé Nast’s heavyweight fashion bible, Vogue, recorded a 3.3% year on year decline in ad revenue in the six months to December. The magazine, which saw circulation increase by 3.6% in the latest ABC results, still managed to overtake Cosmopolitan, with ad revenues exceeding £21 million.

The strength of premium brands in the women’s magazine market was further emphasised by Condé Nast’s Tatler, which increased its ad revenue by 3.2% year on year, reaching well over £8 million. Despite recording its highest ever circulation figure, Hachette’s Red saw ad revenue decrease by 6.6% year on year to just over £8 million.

Elsewhere in the sector, H Bauer’s Real saw ad revenues decline by 29.4% year on year to just under £4 million. ABC results for the six months to December 2002 also brought bad news for Real, which saw its circulation drop by 7.4% year on year to 161,181.
