NRS Chairman Ian Pay Steps Down After Three Years

Ian Pay, chairman of NRS Ltd, has announced his resignation, citing increasing personal and business commitments as the reason for his departure after three years at the helm of the National Readership Survey.

Roger Pratt, managing director of NRS Ltd, thanked Pay for his work as chairman in a short statement this afternoon, confirming that the research boss’s resignation had been accepted by the board yesterday. A successor to the position is currently being sought.

Pay was elected as chairman in April 2001 for an initial three-year term, and while this was extended earlier this year by his reappointment, he has stayed for only six months more. Before his appointment to the board of NRS, Pay held positions with Associated Newspapers, as managing director of the Mail on Sunday, the Evening Standard and with the London Metro as the newspaper’s chief executive (see NRS Awards Contract For Readership Accumulation Study).

NRS has been working to increase the accountability of its research in recent months and earlier this year unveiled a new readership accumulation study.

The study, which shows the length of time taken by newspaper and magazine titles to accumulate readers, has received widespread support from industry figures, with the vast majority of media research professionals believing that it will provide greater accountability for press campaign planning (see Media Researchers Welcome NRS Accumulation Figures).
