Coco-Cola Scores With Football League Sponsorship

The Football League has secured a ground breaking multi-million pound deal with Coca-Coal that will see the soft drinks company become the exclusive sponsor of Divisions One, Two and Three.

The deal represents the largest title sponsorship in history and secures Coca-Cola and Diet Coke as the official soft drinks of the Football League for three seasons with effect from the beginning of the 2004/05 season.

Commenting on the deal, Charlotte Oades, president of Coca-Cola Great Britain, said: “We are very excited to be associated with the Football League at the heart of English and Welsh domestic football.”

She added: “We are particularly pleased to bring some of our key brands – Coca-Cola, diet Coke, Powerade and Dasani Water – to enhance the enjoyment and access to fans and players in their local communities.”

Coca-Cola’s sponsorship brings an end to the League’s partnership with current sponsors Nationwide. It could help the Football League’s attempts to turn the competition into a more direct competitor to the Premiership.

Football League chairman, Sir Brian Mawhinney said: “Attracting a brand of the stature of Coca-Cola is clearly a coup for us and demonstrates the enduring appeal of our competition. This partnership will contribute significantly to the proposed re-branding of the Football League.”

Earlier this month BLM announced plans to launch a dedicated sports marketing division to be headed by Andy Clilverd and Robin Clarke. The new division claims to provide a client first approach to commercial dealings and rather than simply matching budgets to events will exploit the role that sports play in the media mix (see BLM Launches Dedicated Sports Marketing Division).
