August saw the nation’s box offices doing roaring trade, with family audiences flocking to see director Tim Burton’s remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which grossed a massive £26 million in the month.
The film helped Britain’s cinemas enjoy a second consecutive month of family film success, following on from July’s successful performance to become the second biggest month of the year so far, with admissions totaling 15.9 million.
Animated family offering Madagascar also performed well, clinging to its second place at the box office and grossing £5.7 million during the month.
Meanwhile family favourite Herbie returned to the silver screen to notch up takings of £5 million during the month, proving the 37-year old star still has a pull on young audiences.
The Fantastic Four rounded off August’s family offerings, with Marvel’s comic book characters raking in takings of £4.7 million during the month.
