Metro International Most Read Print Title In Europe

Metro International has announced a total daily readership of 15.2 million people, enjoying a healthy year-on-year increase of 19%, becoming the most read print title in Europe amongst 18-40 year-olds, according to research released today from TNS Gallup.

5.2 million 18-40 year-olds read the paper every day, constituting nearly half of its total European daily readership of 10.9m, a 27% increase year-on-year.

The substantial growth of the paper was fuelled by new launches, including New York, Rotterdam, four new cites in France and a national edition in Sweden. Metro International now has 45 daily editions in 17 countries across Europe, North and South America and Asia.

The results of the TNS Gallup survey for November 2004 were released on the same day that Metro International released its trading statement for 2004, revealing a 48.6% year on year increase in net sales to $302.4 million, while operating profits for the twelve months to 31 December 2004 closed at $13.1 million, losing $3.9 million over 2004. Multi-national advertising revenues were reported to have increased by more than 110% over the same period.

Commenting on the results, Pelle Tomberg, president and chief executive officer of Metro International said: “metro achieved another year of rapid sales growth in 2004, but what is especially pleasing is that the Group actually succeed during the year in accelerating top line growth.”
